Test Case: Redesign of a Hydraulic Manifold
In order to test the capabilities of our software, we decided to take a traditional design for a hydraulic manifold and attempt to improve the design so that it would be optimised for additive manufacturing. In the first stage we kept the flow paths and assembly constant but let the software identify the optimum regions to place material. This led to a better design and greatly reduced the mass of the part but still had some of the limitations of the traditional block manifold design.
To truly unleash the potential of AM, we redesigned the flow paths and orientation of the parts in the assembly and re-ran the design optimisation software. This resulted in a far better design with regards to material usage and manufacturability. The results of this case study and a video briefly outlining the steps taken to achieve these results can be seen below.
